Connection is Essential Medicine
manåmko is a grassroots community initiative dedicated to reducing loneliness and social isolation among older adults through gatherings. The word manåmko comes from the CHamoru language of Guam and refers to respected elders. In CHamoru culture, manåmko are honored for their wisdom, life experience, guidance, and contributions to the community. They are cherished knowledge keepers whose stories and perspectives connect generations. We chose the name manåmko because it reflects our belief that elders deserve to be seen, valued, respected, and honored.
Our Story
manåmko was founded by Shawntel Techaira, a CHamoru from Guam now living in Colorado. The idea began after her 90-year-old neighbor spoke openly about loneliness. That conversation revealed a challenge faced by many older adults and inspired a simple but powerful response: creating opportunities for connection. What started as a conversation grew into manåmko gatherings.
